The MND Centre sits within two academic sites and a number of NHS institutions which form one of the biggest Health Care and Research Organisations in Europe, under the umbrella of University College London Partners. The Centre ensures a broad translational research platform in MND based on a range of activities in applied and basic science:
• A network of MND/ALS clinics across North-London, Essex and Hertfordshire working for a referral population of approximately 6,000,000 individuals, with provision of services for patients in need of palliative, respiratory and nutritional care;
• An annual turnover of approximately 400 MND/ALS patients with potential for participating in clinical studies;
• An extensive program of biomarker discovery and validation developed cross-sectionally and longitudinally with other neurological diseases;
• A unique biobank resource of biological fluids and tissues collected longitudinally throughout the main disease milestones from a clinically stratified MND/ALS population;
• Internationally recognised pre-clinical research on animal models of ALS, used for research into basic disease mechanisms, and to translate findings to patients with MND/ALS;
• A genomic program including the search for disease relevant genes, exome and next generation sequence of all consenting MND patients;
• A strong track record in research on environmental factors as disease determinants in epidemiological studies;
• A high level of integration with patient groups, charities and key players in biotechnology and drug discovery.
